Multi-Year Scientific Study Reveals Playing With Dolls Allows Children To Develop And Practice Social Skills, Regardless Of Their Neurodevelopmental Profile "When children, regardless of their neurodevelopmental profile, play with Barbie, their playtime may…
Researchers saw increased brain activity in the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) region when playing with dolls, for both play with a social partner and during solo doll play, but less so during solo tablet play. The pSTS region is heavily involved in and active during social and emotional processing. The findings showed that doll play activates brain regions associated with social information processing such as empathy, indicating that doll play may enable children to rehearse, use and perform these skills even when playing independently. Interestingly, this effect in the brain was similar between children displaying fewer and greater traits commonly associated with autism.

Loss aversion

Loss aversion is a cognitive bias where the pain of a loss is felt more strongly than the pleasure of an equivalent gain. This means people are more motivated to avoid losses than they are to acquire gains. For example, the pain of losing $100 is often felt more intensely than the pleasure of gaining $100.

Pain vs. Pleasure:
The pain of losing something is often felt more intensely than the pleasure of gaining the same thing.

Impact on Decisions:
Loss aversion can influence decisions, especially in situations involving risk or uncertainty, leading people to be more risk-averse when faced with potential losses.

Prospect Theory:
Loss aversion is a key component of prospect theory, developed by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, which explains how people make choices under risk.

Journal collected $400,000 from papers it later retracted

A Sage journal that holds the distinction of highest number of retracted articles in the Retraction Watch Database likely made in excess of $400,000 in revenue from those papers, by our calculations.

We reported in April that the Journal of Intelligent and Fuzzy Systems (JIFS) had retracted 1,561 articles as part of a cleanup operation on likely paper mill activity. The journal, which Sage acquired in November 2023 when it bought IOS Press, had previously retracted a batch of 49 articles in October 2021. That brings its retraction total up to 1,610.

Financial literacy should be mandated in curriculum, teaching staff say

In 2021, 44 per cent of students left Loganlea State High School without plans for work or further study. Today that's just 20 per cent.

The school attributes the success to its financial literacy and wellbeing programs

What's next?
The school and a not-for-profit say financial literacy should be mandated in the national curriculum.

Year 10 students Alyssa Rosario and Cassie Sorenson are already saving for their dream careers as a paramedic and a teacher after completing a financial literacy course.

"We've learned how to save, the difference between wanting and needing stuff, like essentials on what to save for," Cassie said.

She is now saving for university and putting aside cash in an "emergency fund" in case something unexpected comes up.

Parental Genes Indirectly Influence Child Development

A new report reveals that parents’ genes influence their children’s educational and mental health outcomes, even when not directly inherited. This phenomenon, called “genetic nurture,” shows that parents’ genetic tendencies—such as valuing education or possessing strong non-cognitive skills—shape the home environment and positively impact child development.

The strongest effects appear in early childhood and largely reflect family socioeconomic status and parental education levels. These findings emphasize the importance of early-life interventions that support both parents and children to help mitigate educational and mental health disparities.

Parental genetics can influence child development through the environment provided by their parents (for example, reading habits or access to better resources), also known as “genetic nurture” or “indirect genetic effects”.
